Your challenge today is twofold:-
1. Choose one of her screen prints that grabbed your attention. Describe it using your learning in writing. Comment on how Sister Corita 's work challenged you to think or wonder about something.
2. Research (also discuss with your parents one of the following things)
- what is the life of a nun? What has the changed for them over the past 50-70 years?
- who was Sister Corita? Tell us about her.
- what was happening in the sixties that inspired Sister Corita's work - you need to think about the political and world events as well as the changes happening in the Roman Catholic Church.
Take notes and begin planning the wonderful pop art you will create to tell your new found knowledge.
My favourite picture was the one in the third room and it had said "here did all the flowers go? I knew what it meant. It means that the booming has effected nature which it did in all of the wars.
ReplyDeleteThe piece of art that really stood out to me was the one saying "POWER UP" on 4 different canvaces. My in precious on it was that she was trying to say how people try to better one another. She wanted to stop this.

My favourite piece of art would have to be the alphabet because of all the colour and little messages about each letter. Bearing in mind that when Mrs J told us that we were going to the art gallery I was really not happy when I got there it was better than I thought. Art is still not my cup of tea but it was better than I thought this exhibition.

ReplyDeleteFor me it was the 'W' in the alphabet because it was the only letter that I couldn't see clearly. This made me challenged to think why she did this. Maybe she didn't do it on purpose?
Research - what is the life of a nun?
For me reading around this the thing that struck me was that a nun is not allowed to be married. This is because they have taken a vowel of chastity(not to get married or have children) into their vocation.
What has changed for them over the last 50-70 years... They don't have to wear veils... They don't tend to live in large convent style buildings... There are now very few nuns compared to 50 years ago.
The piece of art that caught my attention, was the one that had 'Enriched Bread Wonder' on it. This grabbed my attention because it made me wonder, why is she talking about bread? I thought it was a bit random until Claire told us about the bread brand Wonder and how Sister Corita liked to use everyday things in her art.

A nun is a member of a religious community of women, they devote their life to god in vowels. Nuns aren't allowed to get married or kids, as it is a requirement in their vowels.
My favourite image was the assassination one. I liked it because it had so many hidden messages included in the image and that really caught my attention. This also made me think about the assassination of JFK which also occurred in the 60's.

My favourite image is the POWER one because the POWER goes onto 5 or 6 picture frames the E on the power is on two pictures half and half. This is cool because I have never seen something that simple.

President John F Kennedy, Martin Luther King and Cuban Missile Crisis were assassinated and Neil Armstrong landed on the moon.
Sister Corita :
Her art was made to be a range of different message.
Her work supported Civil- rights movements, she protested about war in China and southeast Asia and about the assassinations of American political leaders.
My favorite picture would be all of the alphabet because it was the first thing I noticed and because it would be a fun way to learn the alphabet back in toughs days and because it stands out and it is different.

ReplyDeleteMy favourite image was the 'power up' picture on more than one frame. It caught my attention because of the bright colours and bold lettering and it made me wonder what message Sister Corita was trying to get across. I think it is trying to tell people to not be afraid of the world and to take risks.

Sister Corita was part of the Roman Catholic Order of Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. She taught at Immaculate Heart College and was chair of the art department. After years of teaching she moved to Boston and devoted herself to art. She died of cancer on 18th of September 1986 aged 67.

Her work challenged me to think because when we first came into the area of the gallery where it was I wandered how she had manged to use all of the colour without paint or pencils.
